New primary source feature “Thinking Like a Historian” introduces students to historical analysis. Each feature (one per chapter) includes at least five sources organized around a central theme, such as “Christian and Muslim Views of the Crusade” (Chapter 9) or “Women and Empire” (Chapter 24). Questions guide students’ analysis of the evidence and a “Putting It All Together” assignment asks them to synthesize these sources together with what they have learned in class.
“Evaluating the Evidence” features provide practice working with documents. Selected for their interest and carefully integrated into their historical context, these sources (three per chapter) provide students with the means and tools for building historical skills, including chronological reasoning, explaining causation, evaluating context, and assessing perspective. Headnotes and questions help students understand the source and connect it to the information in the rest of the chapter.
Narrative updates incorporate the latest scholarship. Updates to the twelfth edition include: the exciting cross-disciplinary scholarship on the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras, river valley civilizations, and the ancient Mediterranean (Chapters 1-6); expanded coverage of the conquest of the Aztec and Inca Empires (Chapter 14); more coverage of global/colonial issues and a new section on the social life of the Enlightenment (Chapter 16); increased attention to the global context and spread of industrialization (Chapter 20); and, up-to-date coverage of contemporary events, including the refugee crisis, issues surrounding terrorism and anti-Muslim sentiment in Europe, and the potential fragmentation of the European Union (Chapter 30).
New source-based questions in the test bank and in the LearningCurve adaptive learning tool in LaunchPad give instructors easier ways to test students on their understanding of sources in the book.
