A two-in-one rhetoric and reader that prepares students for the challenges of academic and disciplinary writing. Based on the class-tested best practices of a first-year composition program with a writing-in-the-disciplines approach, An Insider’s Guide to Academic Writing offers two books in one: an innovative rhetoric of academic writing, and a thematic reader that foregrounds real readings from the disciplines. 

The rhetoric takes students inside the world of higher education, academic writing, and disciplinary writing. Part One introduces the core rhetorical skills students will need to develop college level arguments, and contextualizes those skills with a unique introduction to higher education itself. Part Two introduces a practical, transferable three-part framework ("SLR" = "structure/ language/ reference") for producing key genres of writing within the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and applied fields. Throughout, more than 20 model readings—most of them annotated to highlight moves of academic writing—allow students the opportunity to reflect on, respond to, and practice.

The four chapters in the thematic reader show students how the same compelling issue is presented in general publications and in the academic sphere. These readings spark and illuminate conversations on a range of popular issues that you would expect academic experts to weigh in on: love and family, crime and justice, food and sustainability, and writing and how it helps us grow

The readings are supported by Reading Questions that enhance comprehension; Rhetoric Questions that have students analyze the selections using the rhetorical frames they’ve learned; and Response and Research Questions that ask students to engage actively with additional research.

"Insider" features enliven and illuminate academic and disciplinary writing practices

  • Unique "Insider’s View" sidebars and accompanying online videos in the book’s LaunchPad provide commentaries on disciplinary thinking and writing—both by scholars from across the curriculum, and by students—on how to think and write in different fields. These videos and sidebars put a face on an academic world that may be new and mysterious to students, and humanize knowledge-making processes that may seem intimidating.
  • "Inside Work" activities and Writing Projects help students read, reflect on, and practice moves and genres of academic writing, from rhetorical analysis, argumentation and research papers to textual interpretation (humanities), literature review and theory response (social sciences) , research proposal and formal observation papers (sciences) to applied projects (including lesson plan, business plan, legal brief). 
  • Marginal annotations help student "get inside" the readings, calling out important features and prompting critical analysis from students as they read.
  • Summary "Tip Sheets" at the end of chapters offer practical, easy-to-reference advice for students.

New to This Edition

A new Chapter 2, Writing Process and Reflection, expands advice about the writing process, building a foundation of key writing skills to support the disciplinary approaches and conventions in later chapters. Chapter 2 also prepares students for the kinds of reflection that writing research shows us will help them develop as writers in the long-term, fostering key habits of mind that will help students succeed in their academic writing across the disciplines.

Diverse new readings in the reader, including a new chapter "Writing, Identity, and Technology," address engaging topics and provide full-length academic models of writing across a variety of disciplines. The new chapter 14 explores the importance of writing, serving as a potential capstone to a course on writing in the disciplines, or a useful starting point for helping students understand that writing is valued across a range of disciplines. Critical reading support for engaging with scholarly articles has been added to the reader. Annotated readings point out Insider moves and provide guidance for incorporating them into a student’s own writing.

New and updated examples reflect a broader range of educational experiences and career goals, attending to the needs and interests of students at community colleges as well as four-year schools. Increased attention to writing in different fields - including expanded coverage of writing in the health fields and criminal justice (Chapter 10) - make this an even more useful resources for a diverse student audience.

Authors

Susan Miller-Cochran

Susan Miller-Cochran, now Director of the Writing Program at the University of Arizona, helped shape the First-Year Writing Program at North Carolina State University while she served as Director from 2007-2015.  Her research focuses on instructional technology, ESL writing, and writing program administration. Her work has appeared in College Composition and Communication, Composition Studies, Computers and Composition, and Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and she is also an editor of Rhetorically Rethinking Usability (Hampton Press, 2009) and Strategies for Teaching First-Year Composition (NCTE, 2002). Before joining the faculty at NC State, she was a faculty member at Mesa Community College (AZ). She has served on the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the Executive Board of the Carolinas Writing Program Administrators. She currently serves as Vice President of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.
 


Roy Stamper

Roy Stamper is Senior Lecturer in English and former Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program in the Department of English at North Carolina State University, where he teaches courses in composition and rhetoric. He is also academic advisor to the department’s Language, Writing, and Rhetoric majors. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Lecturer in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and is a recipient of NC State's New Advisor Award. Prior to his current appointment, he worked as a high school English teacher. He has presented papers at a number of local, regional, and national conferences, including the Conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and the Conference on College Composition and Communication.


Stacey Cochran

Stacey Cochran is an assistant professor of English at the University of Arizona and currently serves as Coordinator of Student Success and Wellness for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Additionally he is pursuing a doctorate in the College of Education's Department of Educational Policy Studies and Practice with a focus toward innovative teaching, learning, and research that prioritizes students' emotional well-being and promoting access for women and minorities in educational administration. Before that, he taught for nine years in the First-Year Writing Program at North Carolina State University. He has also taught academic and creative writing at East Carolina University and Mesa Community College (AZ). He earned his M.A. in English from East Carolina University in 2001 with a concentration in Creative Writing. He was finalist for the 1998 Dell Magazines Award, a 2004 finalist for the St. Martin's Press/PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Contest, and finalist for the 2011 James Hurst Prize for fiction. He is an experienced videographer and interviewer who was the host of The Artist's Craft, a television show in Raleigh which featured interviews with many bestselling authors and literary scholars.
