- Achieve with Peter Adams, The Hub A flexible digital platform, Achieve allows instructors to easily differentiate instruction to support ALL students--regardless of their skill levels, preparedness, and diverse backgrounds. Writing Tools support instructors and peer reviewers in commenting on student writing and even linking to relevant instruction from The Hub. Diagnostics point to areas of student weakness and generate an individualized study plan to address them. For ease of use offline, instructors may choose to package either a bound print or looseleaf text with the digital product.
- Inquiry-Based Reading/Writing Projects Born out of Peter Adams’ experience in the classroom, the seven tried-and-true Reading/Writing Projects use current, relevant topics to teach essential reading and composition skills. Each Project is a complete, inquiry-based pathway through a single compelling topic that uses a blend of approaches to engage students in thinking critically and writing in response to reading.
- Flexible, Modular Content for All Faculty—and All Students Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 feature thorough coverage of reading, writing, research, and life skills provided as modular units that can easily be integrated into the core Reading/Writing projects, thus allowing instructors to seamlessly differentiate instruction. The Hub gives you the freedom to implement your own approach to reading and composing to meet the needs of your students.
- Support for Teaching In this unrivaled set of Instructor Resources, Peter Adams shares in-depth instructional support for every single element of The Hub. This trove of information for seasoned and novice instructors alike offers guidance for planning your course and tackling the day-to-day challenges in your classroom, as well as advice for larger challenges that may arise in implementing ALP or co-requisite courses.
- Integrated Reading and Writing Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin and teaching them together strengthens students key skills in both areas. Readings provide models of good writing, and writing about readings promotes deeper understanding of their content, builds connections with prior knowledge, and provide topics for essay writing.
- Thorough Coverage of Non-cognitive Topics During the development of the ALP model at CCBC, it became apparent that non-cognitive issues play a significant role in derailing student success. As a result, Peter Adams and his faculty developed a series of units for use in the corequisite classroom to enable students to problem-solve solutions and find appropriate resources and support services.
- Active Learning approach The Hub is built on active learning pedagogy. Through group work and collaborative activities students learn more, make connections within and between content from different courses, improve skill transfer, and build peer support.
- Unique Inductive Approach to Grammar In keeping with the overall active learning and inquiry-based pedagogy, students work in small groups to review pairs of correct and incorrect sentences to figure out for themselves the grammar rules they represent, recording what they have learned for future reference. Learning grammar this way provides students with a deeper understanding of how these rules work in the texts they read and how to apply them in their own writing.

"An excellent resource that can be adapted to fit a wide variety of first-year writing courses--especially those that need to interweave many concepts and learning outcomes.”–Rebekah Maples, Cal Poly, SLO
“I believe in this approach and have seen my students persist in their coursework at four-year universities after being in the ALP model. It was a very daunting task for me to undertake when I took on teaching this pairing at my institution. I tried several different approaches, but this would have been a lifesaver! Its simple and approachable.”
—Jennifer Riske, Northeast Lakeview College“This project appeals to me and I hope it goes forward. It would be particularly useful to me as a Director of Composition, as it would more carefully guide my instructors and ensure consistency.” —Erin C. Clair, Arkansas Tech University
“I like everything about it, but what is most valuable to ME is the reading theory and the non-cognitive stuff. Im pretty prepared as a writing teacher—Ive been teaching for close to 20 years and I have a Masters and a PhD in rhet/comp—but I am not as well-versed in those other two areas. I think my students would react just fine to it. Its pitched at an appropriate level and I like the variety of materials. I have no doubt it could reach its stated goals. Honestly, nobody knows more about this program than Peter—he developed it, hes taught in it, and hes consulted on it for years in its many different permutations. He knows what hes talking about, and if he says it will work, it will work.”
—Mark Blaauw-Hara, North Central Michigan College“This project could shine a light on the path forward for us and for other English programs that are trying to help students bring writing, reading, and critical thinking together in a well-thought-out, flexible sequence of assignments and advice.”
—Steve Moiles, Southwestern Illinois College

Peter Adams
Peter Adams is the creator of and nations leading expert on the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) and a passionate advocate for updating the current structure of developmental education in America to help more students succeed. As a teacher at the Community College of Baltimore County, Peter saw the opportunity to improve success rates among students placed in developmental writing courses, and so he created and developed the ALP model to meet that need. Peter spent eight years teaching ALP and an additional seven years training faculty across the country on how to implement the ALP model. As of 2017, more than 300 schools in 20 states offer sections of ALP and 7 states have adopted the model statewide. Through his deep experience with the course, its students, and its instructors, Adams truly understands the challenges of this course and is uniquely qualified to author The Hub. Peters professional experience includes tenure with the editorial board of the Journal of Basic Writing and leadership positions with the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). His two influential articles "Basic Writing Revisited" (Journal of Basic Writing, 1993) and "The Accelerated Learning Program: Throwing Open the Gates" (Journal of Basic Writing, 2009) were both major catalysts for the nationwide movement toward mainstreaming basic writers.
