Clear and practical tech comm advice informed by the latest trends

In today’s constantly changing workplace, it’s important to keep up with strategies for successful communication, whether it happens through email, websites, presentations, social media, or cover letters. Practical Strategies for Technical Communication helps get students up to speed with a concise, accessible guide to everything they need to know about audience and purpose, document design, research, style, and more. In the third edition, noted scholar and teacher Stuart A. Selber joins the author team. The new edition features expanded coverage of nontraditional resume formats such as infographics and videos, a new discussion of usability testing, and an array of revised and updated Tech Tips.

Practical Strategies for Technical Communication is available with LaunchPad– a customizable course space featuring an ebook and an exciting array of digital resources including a test bank, adaptive quizzing, multimedia Document Analysis Activities, and more. To order or purchase the print book packaged with LaunchPad, use ISBN 978-1-319-22438-7.

Features

Coverage of all the major tech comm applications helps students learn to write and design letters, e-mail, microblogs, resumes, proposals, reports, descriptions, instructions, presentations, and more. Annotated examples offer plenty of opportunities for analysis, and exercises help students practice new skills.

Practical help with the process of writing technical documents. In addition to solid coverage of audience and purpose, research, style, and document design, the book offers user-friendly features to guide students. These include Focus on Process boxes that highlight variations in the writing process or key steps that require special attention, Guidelines boxes that offer practical help with specific tasks, and Writer's Checklists to aid in revision.

Choices and Strategies charts help students think rhetorically. These charts guide students in making decisions such as how to respond to readers' attitudes, how to choose appropriate graphics, and how to choose the best media or technology tools to achieve their purpose.

Integrated coverage of social media and new technologies gives students the most up-to-date advice in the context of specific tasks and documents. For software tasks, fully revised and updated Tech Tips throughout the book offer step-by-step instructions for creating graphics, modifying templates, designing slides, and more.

A full chapter on ethics as well as Ethics Notes throughout the book remind students to focus on the ethical considerations and implications of their writing.

New to This Edition

Revamped Tech Tips take a rhetorical approach to using technology, giving students practical advice about how and why to use widely available digital tools for common writing tasks, such as reviewing edits, formatting documents, and creating charts.

New coverage of nontraditional resumes. Practical Strategies still walks students through all the essentials of creating a traditional cover letter, resume, and other job application materials; now this coverage is joined by new material illustrating alternate resume formats, including infographics and video resumes, along with realistic tips about when and whether to consider these options.

New discussion of usability testing in Chapter 14 addresses the process of planning and implementing usability testing particularly as it relates to drafting instructions and manuals, including an all-new guidelines box.

“Effective, attractive, and comprehensive.”
–Rebecca Ruggiero, University of Maine

“Absolutely the best technical writing book available!”
–Sandra Johnston, University of Maryland

“A thorough textbook with practical, real-world examples.”
–Julie Groesch, San Jacinto College
