A Hacker handbook has always been a how-to manual for building confidence as a college writer. Diana Hacker conceived A Writer’s Reference as a quick-access innovation in handbook format, and Nancy Sommers continues to reinvent its content for an evolving course emphasizing critical reading and writing. For more than 25 years, the book has allowed students to build confidence and take ownership of their college writing experience.

A Writer’s Reference, Ninth Edition, and LaunchPad for A Writer’s Reference together represent a next-level tool for college writers. What’s most exciting? An emphasis on help that is personal, practical, and digital. A Writer’s Reference is reimagined as a system that helps students target their needs and see their successes; that offers innovative practice with writing, reading, thinking, and research; and that lives in an engaging multimedia environment.

Diagnostics, e-book tools, and custom options allow students and teachers to personalize the handbook. How-to pages, writing guides, student models, and exercises and activities deliver pragmatic, transferable lessons. And with a more interactive e-book, 24 new video tutorials for argument, analysis, research, and citation, and tools that make assigning and assessing a breeze, LaunchPad will be the digital solution that boosts your confidence as well as your students’. A Writer’s Reference, class tested by literally millions of college writers, still offers the right stuff.

Writer's Reference with Exercises by Diana Hacker; Nancy Sommers - Ninth Edition, 2018 from Macmillan Student Store

Features

A Writer's Reference is easy to use and easy to understand. The handbook's explanations are brief, accessible, and illustrated by examples, most by student writers. Boxes, charts, checklists, and menus are designed to help users find what they need quickly.

It provides authoritative, trustworthy instruction. Most writing resources on the Web offer information, but they don't offer instruction. With the ninth edition of A Writer's Reference, students have reference content that has been class-tested by students and instructors. Users who loved the new Writing Guides in the eighth edition will be pleased to know they are still here in the ninth.

It provides maximum flexibility for the teaching and learning situation. Instructors can choose from among three versions of A Writer's Reference to meet their students' needs: A Writer's Reference, A Writer's Reference with Exercises, and A Writer's Reference with Writing about Literature. And our robust custom program provides endless opportunities to add original or publisher-supplied content.

It is available in affordable e-book formats that match our print books page for page and provide students with the ability to read, highlight, take notes, search, and share. Visit macmillanlearning.com/ebooks for more information.

It comes with the unparalleled service and support you have come to expect from Bedford/St. Martin's. We have been in the field of composition with you for more than thirty-five years. We provide professional resources, professional development workshops, training for digital tools, quick, personal service when you need it, and so much more.

New to This Edition

A new how-to approach offers step-by-step instruction that will help students apply writing advice in practical ways and transfer skills to many different kinds of writing assignments. Fourteen new boxes offer the straightforward help that instructors and students want—how to go beyond a Google search, how to write better peer review comments, and more.

New Writer’s choice boxes on grammar and style offer opportunities for students to practice critical thinking at the sentence level. A new rhetorical approach emphasizes decision making (between first or third person, between active and passive voice, and so on) based on a writer’s purpose and audience. This approach gives instructors flexibility—a way to individualize instruction for students who may need more than a conventional explanation of the rules.

New ways to navigate bring students to key content quickly. Common student questions about writing, written in plain language, appear on each tab and help students find answers to questions such as How do I separate a source’s ideas from my own? and What can I do if my writing is too wordy? Useful chapter previews direct students to specific help within the writing and research chapters.

More help for research writers equips students in composition and across the disciplines with up-to-date citation guidelines—including MLA 2016 and Chicago 2017 guidelines—and formatting help. The ninth edition includes ample instruction in conducting responsible research, the foundation of academic work, and features a new APA-style paper.

LaunchPad: A digital companion that engages in new ways and offers new teaching material. LaunchPad for A Writer’s Reference combines an interactive e-book, engaging tutorial content, and innovative practice and assessment tools in a fully customizable course space. LaunchPad allows you to mix our resources with yours, assign easily, and save yourself time.

  • A new e-book, still easy to assign, now has embedded video content and tools that allow students to personalize the handbook (highlighting/note taking)
  • New video tutorials for writing and citation help students with difficult academic concepts. 24 new tutorials combine engaging video with scorable practice items to help with argument writing, analytical writing, annotated bibliography, and MLA and APA style.
  • LearningCurve adaptive quizzing—along with more than 300 additional exercise items and writing prompts—offer plenty of grammar, research, and writing practice, all of which reports to a convenient gradebook.
  • Video tools make it easy to integrate open-source content (videos from YouTube and other sources) into your LaunchPad course and allow you to build scorable, trackable response assignments around that content. The video tools allow your class to engage in online discussions about the material, fostering a social environment.

Your handbook, your way. With Curriculum Solutions, customizing your handbook is easy.

  • ForeWords for English. With pre-built content chapters (12–16 pages each) on a variety of topics, you can create the handbook that meets the needs of you and your students. Choose from more than a dozen modules on writing proposals, time management, CSE style, business writing, using sentence templates for academic writing, and more.
  • Make it your own. You can further customize by adding brief original, school-specific content such as goals of the writing program, location and hours of the writing center, common syllabus/assignments, and so on.

  • Add a tab. Or two. You can further customize by adding specific tabs to A Writer’s Reference, namely Writing in the Disciplines, Strategies for Online Learners, Resources for Multilingual Writers and ESL, Understanding and Composing Multimodal Projects.

"My former students tell me they consult the handbook regularly once they leave my required writing courses."
Tracy Michaels, University of Massachusetts, Lowell

"I prefer the handbook over OER because my students do. I want to use what they will use and will gain from. When students open up a book, they are ready to work. When they open up a Web browser, they are bombarded with a lot of other things."
Guy Krueger, University of Mississippi

"We have used a number of texts over the years. For the past ten years, the one that’s been used consistently and successfully in our program is A Writer’s Reference."
Andrea McCrary, Queens University of Charlotte

"What we were looking for was a centerpiece for building a culture of writing on our campus—a tool that every student, adjunct faculty member, and full-time faculty would see as a four-year investment in writing. Our custom edition of A Writer’s Reference has become that centerpiece."
John McKinnis, Buffalo State College

"Writing is the commonality that takes students through the educational experience. Whether students are writing a paper for their nursing class, building a résumé, revising a composition essay, or doing an engineering assignment, the handbook is of value to them."
Margaret Holloway, University of Alabama

"The OWL is free, but its MLA and APA sections are not as user-friendly or as detailed as these sections in A Writer’s Reference."
Elizabeth Haddox, El Paso Community College

"I love LaunchPad for the LearningCurve quizzes that allow students to move at their own pace. I see better writing from students after they work through the quizzes."
Diane Yerka, University of Minnesota, Morris
