With its distinctive personality and contemporary edge, Joshua Gunn’s new introduction to public speaking, Speech Craft, engages students in the speechmaking process like no other textbook available. No matter if students are giving a toast or are speaking to inform or to persuade, Speech Craft's emphasis on the idea of speechmaking as community-building will help students connect public speaking to their own lives and find ways to make meaningful and ethical connections with their audiences. Speech Craft gets to the root of public speaking with purpose by opening students’ eyes to the power of speech in our world and speaking for change. Its unique chapter, Speaking for Social Change, strikes a realistic yet hopeful note about speech as the ultimate advocacy and civic engagement tool. A new book for a new generation, Speech Craft is supported by a robust and powerful digital package that will make teaching and of-the-moment feedback a life-changing process for instructors and students. Speech Craft brings a passion for public speaking into the classroom at an affordable price.

Public Speaking with Passion and Purpose

Features

Speech Craft brings purpose and personality to the discussion of traditional public speaking topics:

    • The Author: Joshua Gunn, The University of Texas at Austin, is an award winning teacher and highly regarded scholar known for his research on human representation, self-understanding, and self-fashioning through analysis of celebrity culture, music, religion, love, symbolism, and political rhetoric.
    • A conversational voice and high-energy examples draw students in. Speech Craft is filled with vivid and energetic examples that cover all of the traditional and the important new speech topics covered in the course. Examples are drawn from history, pop culture, and personal experience including fascinating speeches from the Ancient Greeks, a look at style through the eyes of Tim Gunn (style is more than word choice!), listening skills at a Beyonce concert, and an informative speech on preparing a meal while driving: "car cookery."
    • Top scholarship that takes the discipline seriously but is always accessible and never boring. From the Greeks to the most cutting edge new scholarship, Speech Craft roots students in the speech instruction in the vibrant range of research and theory across Rhetoric, Communication, and Social Science.
    • A modern look. Speech Craft's design matches the personality of its content--modern, bright, and visually engaging. There's enough space for notes, an accessible layout, and a one-of-a-kind art program that works pedagogically with the text to reinforce concepts.

A focus on public speaking for the community -- personal, local, career. Speech Craft helps students understand that, at its core, meaningful public speaking is about making an ethical connection with the audience and deepening relationships within the local community. It's rare to give a formal speech to thousands of people at a political event. It's more common to give a toast to 100 people at a sibling's wedding or present information at a local community event, club, or business meeting. Thus, Speech Craft starts local. It covers in depth all the traditional speeches taught in the course, like informative and persuasive, while also emphasizing speeches that students are more likely to give in their lives, like toasts, celebratory speeches, eulogies, or speeches to small groups at work or in town. No matter the speech, students learn how to strengthen community bonds through audience analysis, ethical listening, and more.

A unique chapter - Chapter 19, Speaking for Social Change - shows how speaking for social change connects speakers to their communities. This capstone chapter takes students from the personal and community-based focus toward the possibility of using their newly confident voices for civic engagement. The history of activism is presented through examples like Rosa Parks refusing to give up her bus seat, to the protests in Tahrir Square in Cairo.

Pedagogy that guides, engages, and helps students apply what they are learning.

    • "You will learn to" boxes help students stay grounded and focused on specific learning objectives as they move through the content.
    • Innovative Visual Summaries at the end of each chapter help students study and review.
    • Sample annotated speeches, including personal speeches, like the author's eulogy for his grandmother.

Affordable and flexible. Speech Craft comes in a variety of formats (digital, loose-leaf, bound book) with considerately priced options that align with financial realities.

LaunchPad for Speech Craft offers powerful media along with ease of use. LaunchPad brings together all student media and instructor resources for teaching into one place. Complete with its own gradebook or integrated into your campus LMS, LaunchPad for Speech Craft makes it easy to assign homework, assess student progress, and manage the course. LaunchPad for Speech Craft includes:

  • Speech Craft Activities created by the author for students to work on in groups or as homework assignments.
  • Chapter Quizzes which can be used as review or as pre-lecture activities.

  • A host of Speech Craft specific ancillaries for instructors like an instructor's manual, test bank, and lecture slides are available inside LaunchPad.

New to This Edition

Love it — I love the high energy and enthusiasm that comes through the text. I like the real-life application and relevant examples, and I like the humor infused throughout the lessons.
—Kaylea Annen, The Ohio State University

I think Josh's examples really resonate with students they watch the shows he mentions and they listen to the music he references.
—Belle Edson, Arizona State University

Speech Craft is a refreshing alternative to public speaking texts. Its "hip" artwork, conversational tone, concise presentation of core concepts, and emphasis on public speaking in all context, not just formal presentation, would appeal to our students far more than our current text.
—Lisa Packard, Gateway Technical College

A public speaking text that makes the reader feel like becoming an effective speaker is actually attainable.
—Merry Buchanan, University of Central Oklahoma

There is a real feeling that the information will help you in life, not just in the classroom or in the particular course.
—David Majewski, Richard Bland College of William & Mary

This text offers a contemporary and relevant approach to the study of public speaking, especially the ways in which traditional elements of persuasion intersect with social media and social justice.
—Christopher Joseph Westgate, Ph.D., Johnson & Wales University

"Forward thinking and relevant. Speech Craft is giving us the overarching concepts for great conversations but plenty of open space for us to take it in the direction we want to teach it."
—Pauline Matthey, Clemson University

"Most importantly, Speech Craft situates public speaking in the current historical moment of public activism and engagement."
—Sandy Pensoneau-Conway, Southern Illinois University Carbondale

"I like the first person approach, the humor, and the sometimes casual expression. All of those things make the book seem engaging and approachable. Students will feel that this is a real person talking with them. And this real person understands them and their fears and their interests."
—Pamela Solberg, Western Technical College

"The writer explicitly identifies students' feelings about being required to take the class and about speaking anxiety, and the author emphatically addresses those feelings, which will make a student feel good about the book - this is not an interpersonal textbook, but instead is someone who is writing to me, someone who understands me."
—Amy Powell, Central Michigan University

"I am particularly pleased with the amount of scholarly research included and cited/explained for students."
—Kyle Kelly, SW Michigan College

"Gunn's book, Speech Craft, advances language and performance that are inviting and possible for our students in their roles as emerging speakers with their individual craft and messaging."
—R. Joseph Rodriguez, University of Texas at El Paso

"The chapters are incredibly well written and engaging. I would best describe them as thoughtful. I found myself nodding and saying 'that's right' more than ever in response to the information that was included."
—Erica Cooper, Roanoke College

"Very accessible, easy to follow, quality information presented in an easy-to-digest format."
—Tami Martinez, Indiana University South Bend

"I would say that the material is an educational treasure. It is a most valuable instructional tool."
—James Stewart, Tennessee Technological University

"This book is very effective at meeting students on their level, providing excellent and relevant examples, and making the subject approachable. I think students would learn more from this text because they would be more likely to read it. It's written in an effective, easy to read way."
—Mary Beth Ashbury, Middle Tennessee State University

"I like the conversational tone…It feels like it would connect well with the freshman level student, not too easy, but not too complex."
—Amber Edwards, Dean College
