Features

Andrea Lunsford gives students credit for all the skills they’ve developed from social and informal writing, and she has thoroughly revised and updated The St. Martin’s Handbook to help students transfer those skills to today’s academic writing and research projects—from traditional print-based genres to Web-based texts and presentations.

Andrea Lunsford’s broad and deep research provides the groundwork for a comprehensive handbook that helps teachers teach and helps students find answers on their own.

A rhetorical approach shows that there is no single "correct" way to write—instead, effective writers make good choices for the situation.

A focus on reflection helps students engage with writing and transfer skills more effectively from one context to another.

Support for teachers includes advice and activities in Teaching with Lunsford Handbooks--plus Andrea’s weekly "Teacher to Teacher" blog and "Multimodal Mondays" assignment ideas on Bedford Bits.

A new approach to U.S. academic English integrates the advice all students need. International students and Generation 1.5 English speakers aren’t the only students puzzled by English structures and academic genres. The St. Martin’s Handbook’s advice for multilingual writers comes from expert contributors Paul Kei Matsuda and Christine Tardy, and coverage of these topics is integrated throughout the Eighth Edition, making the information accessible to students from all language and educational backgrounds.

Focused, practical advice helps students make effective rhetorical choices in multimodal projects increasingly in demand in composition courses. Andrea’s conversations with instructors nationwide show that students engage eagerly with the many new kinds of academic projects they are asked to create--from blogs and wikis to presentations and PechaKuchas--but that they still need help composing such work for academic audiences.

Integrated, interactive, assignable digital content in LaunchPad takes advantage of all the Web can do, offering videos of student writers with prompts asking students to reflect on their own writing, texts by student writers in multiple genres with activities for analysis, and LearningCurve adaptive quizzing.

Connect/Create/Reflect assignments in most chapters make the handbook teachable and help students learn to answer their own questions.

Videos teach students what the handbook is for and how to use it.

"I like it because it emphasizes good writing rather than mistakes."
Linda Van Buskirk, Cornell University

"A handbook that is truly complete. It is also very versatile."
Jeff Harris, Somerset Community College

"This book treats students as practicing writers…. I think this respect says quite a bit about the goals of the textbook, and I think students appreciate that respect."
Nathan Serfling, South Dakota State University

The St. Martin's Handbook is the most practical handbook I have found and used in my 30+ years of teaching. The best information I can give is that my students keep it.
Sherry Forkum, Santa Rosa Junior College
