In this chapter we first discuss concepts, the building blocks of theoretical systems. After reviewing the functions of concepts, we discuss conceptual and operational definitions, and how they relate to the research process. We then distinguish among the four levels of theory and explain how models represent different aspects of the real world. We close this chapter by reviewing the debate over theory-then-research and research-then-theory as different strategies to adopt when doing research in the social sciences.
