CHAPTER ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we turn to strategies of data collection for qualitative analyses. Previous chapters have focused primarily on quantitative research methods, which are concerned with the quantification of social phenomena through processes of measurement, counting, association, and causality; in contrast, qualitative research methods are rooted in the Verstehen (empathic understanding) tradition, discussed in Chapter 1. Here, emphasis is placed on documenting, interpreting, and understanding the practices and experiences of individuals, groups, and institutions, as well as on the processes involved therein, for example, perception and interpretation, language and behavior, interaction, and meaning-making.
