CHAPTER ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine common contemporary methods of preparing and coding data. We discuss deductive coding-in which researchers derive codes from theory-as well as inductive coding-in which researchers identify categories from data-and provide rules for coding and codebook construction. We address the issue of coding reliability and discuss methods researchers can use to increase reliability. Finally, we describe various coding devices and software programs used in storing, processing, accessing, and analyzing data sets.
