CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 3, students should be able to:

  1. identify and discuss the research problems characteristic of the social sciences.
  2. understand units of analysis and be familiar with the ecological and individualistic fallacies.
  3. understand dependent, independent, control, continuous, and discrete variables,
  4. be familiar with the idea of relationships between variables and be able to describe hypotheses in terms of their magnitude and direction.
  5. construct hypotheses.
  6. identify and locate the various sources of information on research problems and hypotheses.
