CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 5, students will be able to:

  1. understand and describe the research design and the classic experimental design.
  2. discuss causal inferences, including the distinct operations of demonstrating covariation, eliminating spurious relations, and establishing the time order of the occurrences.
  3. describe the three components of a classic research design: comparison, manipulation, and control.
  4. distinguish between external and internal validity.
  5. understand and describe the types of threats to the internal validity of experiments and the different methods of controlling these threats.
  6. define and give examples of the four major types of research designs.
