CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 6, students should be able to:

  1. describe the kinds of relationships that lend themselves to study with cross-sectional and quasi experimental designs.
  2. discuss the respective strengths and weaknesses of cross-sectional versus quasi experimental designs.
  3. understand the major types of quasi experimental designs (contrasted groups, planned variation, time series, control series)
  4. explain the purpose of combined studies
  5. appraise the value of preexperimental designs, including the one shot case study.
  6. compare and contrast the various designs in terms of their strengths and weaknesses.
