CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 8, students should be able to:

  1. discuss the aims of sampling, including how samples are utilized in describing populations.
  2. describe the various types of sample designs, distinguish between probability and nonprobability sampling procedures, and explain the pros and cons of each procedure.
  3. discuss the major types of probability sampling, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to select a sample using each method.
  4. understand the dynamics of sample size, including standard error and confidence interval.
  5. evaluate the factors that introduce nonsampling errors into an investigation.
