CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 10, students should be able to:

  1. understand and describe the major methods of survey research.
  2. understand the advantages and disadvantages of questionnaires, personal interviews, telephone interviews, and online surveys.
  3. describe the different types of personal interviews.
  4. understand and describe the basic principles of interviewing.
  5. understand the benefits and drawbacks of online surveys, as well as the growing prevalence of live feeds and big data.
  6. be familiar with the relative strengths and weaknesses of the four major methods of data collection involved in survey research.
