CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 14, students should be able to:

  1. understand the main criteria for coding schemes and the rules of coding, especially the differences between deductive and inductive coding.
  2. construct a simple codebook.
  3. understand the principle of coding reliability and the steps involved in its determination.
  4. describe the different types of coding devices.
  5. understand the procedures for editing and cleaning the data.
  6. explain the use of computers in social science research, including the various types of programs available to researchers.
