CHAPTER OBJECTIVES

Based upon their reading of Chapter 17, students should be able to:

  1. explain the concepts of control, elaboration, and prediction.
  2. explain how moderation and mediation help researchers examine relationships among variables.
  3. understand cross-tabulation and partial correlation as methods of control, and use these techniques in determining whether relationships are spurious.
  4. understand multiple regression as a control operation and be able to interpret a multiple regression equation.
  5. use causal models and estimate path coefficients.
