How to Create a Works Cited or References List : A Research Guide by Mike Palmquist

Avoiding Problems: Title and Order of Your Documentation Sources Page

For MLA style, your page is titled "Works Cited." However, if you want to acknowledge works that you read but did not actually cite in your text, you may title your page "Works Consulted." Your sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name.

For APA style and CSE style, your page is titled "References." For APA style, your sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name. For CSE style, your sources are numbered and listed in the order in which they appear in the document.

For Chicago style, your page is titled "Bibliography." Your sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name.

The title of your documented sources page varies, depending on your documentation system. The column on the right tells you what title to put at the top of your list of documented sources, depending on the style you've chosen.
