Written by a leading researcher in one of the nation’s top I/O programs, Paul Levy’s text has long been acclaimed for its concise, research-based approach and personable writing. Features
I/O Today: Brief articles tackling current events issues, emerging developments, innovative research, and hot button debates in the field
Practitioner Forum: Applied lessons written by individuals working in I/O now; these articles provide the students with a unique window into the field, from I/O psychologists who are currently practicing
Taking it to the Field: Hypothetical scenarios that give students a opportunity to practice the concepts from the chapter in an applied setting
New to This Edition
1. Chapter 5 has been retitled Performance Management (formerly Performance Appraisal), signifying the broad topic under which Performance Appraisal falls
2. Several new Practitioner Forums have been added to the text, covering topics such as the I/O psychologists role in litigation settlements, innovations in leadership development programs, and Verbal 360 performance appraisals.
3. Several new I/O Today articles have been added, covering topics such as diversity and performance, the debate about eliminating performance ratings, and gamified microlearning.
Georgi Yankov/Bowling Green State University (Levy user): "I believe in it...This is an evolving textbook that has reached amazing heights. Thank you, Paul Levy!"
Dan Ispas/Illinois State University (Levy user): "[Levy] provides great coverage of the main topics in I/O psychology...I rate [Levy] higher than all the texts I have reviewed...The topic is very vast but I think this book does the best job on the market of balancing depth and quality."
Derek D. Bardell/Delgado Community College (Levy user): "I wholeheartedly agree with the author's approach. He has masterfully captured the essence of industrial psychology and all of its intricacies...This text presents information in a clear and concise format and provides resources for student development...The author achieved and in some cases surpassed the goals set forth. The text offers a bevy of resources, stresses analytical reasoning and builds diction in a sequential manner."
Brian A. Johnson/The University of Tennessee at Martin (Levy user): "For me as an instructor the Critical Thinking and Application Questions are the most interesting feature of the text. I have used those in my own homework questions. I think that the Practitioner Forum boxes are of great interest to the students. I have also started to make more use of the Taking It to the Field in recent semesters in my courses...Accessibility of the writing style for the student as well as the coverage of quality research is well done throughout...My students have consistently stated how well the author has done in capturing their attention as well as explaining the material so that they could understand it."
Angela Neal/University of South Carolina, Lancaster (Levy user): "This textbook is superior to others I have seen based on readability and content. My rating is the highest possible...the text is still the best that I have seen for this subject."
Kimberly T. Silva/University of Houston (Spector user): "I agree with the Dr. Levy's approach. As a professor of an online class, my students rely heavily on the textbook. Writing a book that tells the story of I/O psychology is one of the best ways to keep them engaged in the course...[Chapter 5] provides much more detail [than Spector] on the social nature of performance appraisals which, in my opinion, is just as important as the structural nature of performance appraisal (e.g., rating scales)...The text communicates complex topics clearly and concisely. The figures and tables help tell the story of I/O psychology in a unique and powerful way."
Eren Ozgen/Florida State University (Robbins/Judge user): "I like the Levy text. It is very well written. Chapters are organized and easy to follow. The narrative is dynamic. I like technical tips. I think the text suits well for both graduate and undergraduate class...The text aims to deliver a concise, research-based approach, and personable writing style and a thoroughly contemporary perspective on the field. [Chapters 1 and 3] are detailed, have depth, are well researched and include current events and facts in the field. The narrative is easy to follow and dynamic."
Liz Baker/Kent State University (Muchinsky user): "[Levy’s] point about IO textbooks in general being somewhat ‘dry’ is very true. I often feel like authors don't make the effort to discuss interesting examples, so I have extra work cut out for me to think of all my own examples in lectures. His view that textbooks about IO should be more fun for students is something I agree with (and makes my job as an instructor easier). Also, my number one pet peeve is outdated research references...so the fact that he keeps his updated is a huge plus! Without updated research references, our students are not learning best practices. His heavier focus on updated research, as well as the chapters related to research (Chapters 2 and 4 specifically) is imperative (without a foundational understanding of this...students do not learn to think critically)...[Levy is] definitely superior to what I use. Updated research, and importantly, ‘easy to read’ narrative. The critical thinking questions at the end of the chapters might be my favorite though."
