Available for the first time with Macmillan's new online learning platform, Achieve, Krugman and Wells’ widely adopted text is more effective than ever at helping students reach new levels of economic understanding.

When it comes to explaining fundamental economic principles by drawing on current economic issues and events, there is no one more effective than Nobel laureate and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and co-author, Robin Wells. In this best-selling introductory textbook, Krugman and Wells’ signature storytelling style and uncanny eye for revealing examples help readers understand how economic concepts play out in our world.

Along with the addition of Achieve, the new edition is revised and enhanced throughout, including a powerful new online version in Achieve, incisive new looks at market power and externalities in microeconomics, and updated analysis of long-run growth and extensive coverage of the economic impacts and policy responses to the coronavirus pandemic in macroeconomics.

Features

New to This Edition

Achieve offers the best value and price. Because students’ and instructors’ needs are changing, our most powerful learning option is also our most affordable. Achieve is a new digital solution that brings all of the best aspects of Krugman/Wells and Macmillan's digital resources together in one place. Built on best practices in learning science, Achieve provides students with robust tools to succeed in economics while giving instructors insights into their students' understanding and performance.

Current events framed by the world’s best communicators of economics. No other text stays as fresh as Krugman and Wells, from powerful technology firms such as Amazon and Google to the global economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this edition, we've added cutting edge New Analysis features online in Achieve including Bloomberg videos and Econofact memos. These activities pair journalistic takes on pressing issues with questions based on Bloom's taxonomy.

A richer commitment to broadening students’ understanding of the global economy. With unparalleled insight and clarity, the authors use their hallmark narrative approach to take students outside of the classroom and into our global world. Starting in Chapter 1, there is a new principle on how increases in the economy's potential lead to economic growth over time. To reflect our rapidly changing world, there is an expanded section on market power and the digital economy and an incisive new look at externalities.

Thoroughly updated throughout. The sixth edition has been updated to reflect our always changing world. Along with updated graphs and changes in every chapter in the text, the new edition features 5 new chapter-opening stories, 9 new business cases, and 22 new Economics in Action Applications.

"The text does an excellent job meeting my course needs! I used another introductory microeconomics book at a different university and the Krugman text is MUCH better - the examples are clear and easy for students to relate to, and the topical events in the chapter introductions provide context for the economics that follows.”
- Meredith Crane, Cincinnati State Technical & Community College

"Extremely well written. I think a policy focused approach is what initially drew me to the text. I have continued to use the text as the homework management system saw increased value to the students."
- Michael Polcen, Northern Virginia Community College

"I think the coverage [of Economic Principles in Chapter 1]  is better than my current text because it gives a very broad picture of what economics is about. The Principles are really what we are about to embark on in the remaining chapters, which I like. In lecture I would be able to give them examples of ‘when we will see this again’ which I like to do because it piques their interest in the remainder of the course.”
- Julie Gonzalez, University of California - Santa Cruz

“I am happy with the online homework system. The text has very nice lecture presentations for the chapters and a very strong test bank with lots of good questions. It is important to me that the test bank questions include tables and images as well as problems that require the students to complete calculations using formulas from the textbook chapters."
- Cynthia Foreman, Clark College
