The Story of Development Told through the Lives of Real People

More than a textbook, Scientific American: Lifespan Development (a chronological approach) is a suite of interactive materials that encompasses the full scope of human experience and makes culture central to every chapter. Contemporary science and real-life applications unite in this unique story-telling approach to human development, built around Scientific American-style stories of 17 individuals and families from communities across the United States.

This collaboration between experienced researchers Allison Sidle Fuligni and Andrew Fuligni and writer/producer Jessica Bayne is designed to meet the needs of today’s students and instructors, and is built around five approaches that scaffold students’ understanding of developmental science.

Features

Achieve
Macmillan Learning’s Achieve sets a whole new standard for integrating activities, assessments, and analytics into one powerful learning platform. It brings together a host of features for students and instructors, including an interactive e-textbook, LearningCurve adaptive quizzing, immersive learning activities, videos, and extensive instructor resources.

Storytelling You Will Remember
Each chapter tells the story of a child or adult and their family in both the text and in the accompanying online videos. These stories and video profiles help students see the challenges and opportunities of each life stage.

Inclusive Coverage to Represent the Broad Contexts that Impact Development
Whether it’s the impact of urbanization in China or the stress of remote schooling in Chicago, understanding the context of development is important. This book casts a broad net over what diversity means and covers complex family structures, intersectional identities, and challenges faced by those who are affluent and those who are less well-off.

Engaging and Current Science
In the spirit of Scientific American magazine, the authors present important breakthroughs using language that anyone can understand. The visual program includes infographics about brain development and the impact of context on development. Share It! features present current research to improve students’ lives. Online Spotlight on Science activities walk students through current and classic scientific work.

Building Skills
Scientific American: Lifespan Development aims to build critical thinking skills and scientific literacy to help everyone navigate a world full of information and misinformation.
