Public Speaking with Passion and Purpose

Using Macmillan's highly touted LaunchPad to deliver superior content online, Speech Craft engages students with a contemporary edge and a focus on connecting with the local community.  It’s a public speaking textbook unlike any other. Joshua Gunn’s distinctive style and strong scholarship are paired with compelling visuals to prepare students for public speaking situations in their own lives, whether they are giving a toast or presenting to the class. Wildly successful in its first edition, Speech Craft has drawn accolades from instructors around the country for its distinctive personality, student-friendly tone, and support for teaching the public speaking course both face-to-face and online. The second edition explores public speaking as advocacy and pays careful attention to diversity, empowering students to make ethical connections with their audiences and meaningful differences in the world around them.

A robust and powerful digital package, LaunchPad for Speech Craft supports instructors and students with the video assessment program powered by GoReact, thoroughly revised LearningCurve scenario-based questions, video speech clips, and more.

Features

Highlighting purpose and personality in the teaching of public speaking, Speech Craft is unique because of:

  • The author: Joshua Gunn, The University of Texas at Austin, is an award-winning teacher and highly regarded scholar known for his research on human representation, self-understanding, and self-fashioning.
  • The tone: Full of vivid, high-energy, and inclusive examples that cover traditional and important new speech topics, Speech Craft draws on history, pop culture and personal experience.
  • The scholarship: Rooting students in the classical history of speech instruction, Speech Craft takes the discipline seriously without ever feeling boring. A solid underpinning of  research and theory across Rhetoric, Communication and Social Science allows students to access the core tenets of public speaking.
  • The look: A hip, bright, and visually engaging design offers students an accessible layout and a one-of-a-kind illustrations that work pedagogically with the text to reinforce concepts.

A focus on public speaking for the community -- personal, local, career. Speech Craft helps students understand that, at its core, meaningful public speaking is about making an ethical connection with the audience and deepening relationships within the local community. It's rare to give a formal speech to thousands of people at a political event. It's more common to give a toast to 100 people at a sibling's wedding or present information at a local community event, club, or business meeting. Thus, Speech Craft starts local. It covers in depth all the traditional speeches taught in the course, like informative and persuasive, while also emphasizing speeches that students are more likely to give in their lives, like toasts, celebratory speeches, eulogies, or speeches to small groups at work or in town. No matter the speech, students learn how to strengthen community bonds through audience analysis, ethical listening, and more.

A unique chapter - Chapter 19, Speaking for Social Change - shows how speaking for social change connects speakers to their communities. This capstone chapter takes students from the personal and community-based focus toward the possibility of using their newly confident voices for civic engagement. The history of activism is presented through examples like Rosa Parks refusing to give up her bus seat, to the protests in Tahrir Square in Cairo.

Engaging pedagogy helps students apply what they’re learning.

  • “You will learn to” boxes focus on specific learning objectives.
  • Innovative visual summaries offer quick  review at the end of each chapter.
  • Digital Dives, a multi-media feature in each chapter, drive students to the LaunchPad to listen to a podcast or watch a video clip from the web, and then answer critical thinking questions.
  • Sample annotated speeches and professionally shot videos and clips provide thorough examples in areas like personal, informative, persuasive, and online speeches; speech concepts in action; needs improvement examples; and more.
  • End-of-chapter reviews help students strengthen their understanding, with engaging activities to practice new skills.

Speech Craft is aligned with the National Communication Association’s learning outcomes. The book’s handy guide showcases the correlation up front and makes it easy to adapt the book to school’s specific initiatives.

Available with LaunchPad for Speech Craft, bringing together all student and instructor resources in one place. LaunchPad makes it easy to assign homework, assess student progress, and manage the course with tools like LearningCurve adaptive quizzing, Digital Dives, author-created activities, speech videos and clips, the full e-Book and the powerful video assessment program and Macmillan Mobile Video apps powered by GoReact..

New to This Edition

Enhancements to LaunchPad for Speech Craft include:

  • Video assessment program powered by GoReact, which allows students to post, comment on, assess, and perform peer review on videos.
  • New Digital Dive activities and videos include how to craft an elevator speech and pitch , how to identify plagiarism, coverage of common workplace speaking situations, and how to light yourself for an online speech.

A pedagogical approach that reflects the way today’s audiences listen and students learn. Drawing on emerging research, Speech Craft recognizes how we regularly divide our attention among multiple stimuli at once.

  • New advice on presentation aids helps speakers adapt to “hyper cognitive”audiences.
  • Bold illustrations and photographs and an appealing design keep students engaged with the text.
  • New Digital Dives enable active learning, giving students the chance to try their hand at creating an elevator pitch or effectively lighting an online speech.

An important new section on advocacy emphasizes how speech can make a difference. Chapter 19, Speaking for Social Change, now begins with timely examples of speaking to advocate in the civic sphere, showing how people across the political spectrum can speak up for the causes they believe in.

More support for fundamental skills of speech writing. Speech Craft provides students with more of the instructional content that helps them improve as public speakers:

  • New models for organizing and outlining speeches, including  informal speaker’s notes and helpful annotations on speech outlines.
  • Engaging new sample speech excerpts and videos, such as Greta Thunberg’s speech at the UN climate summit and Mark Zuckerberg’s speech about freedom of expression.

Further attention to diversity and cultural inclusivity. Building on the strength of the first edition, Speech Craft 2e engages even more deeply with  the values of diversity and inclusion. The text embraces the singular “they” to avoid gender binaries, includes an updated discussion of gender and sexual identity as part of audience analysis, and represents a broader range of contemporary speakers.

Thoroughly revised and improved supplement package, including

  • An innovative updated Instructor’s Manual with a new preface on how to teach the course online
  • Redesigned lecture slides, based on user feedback
  • An updated and expanded Test Bank
  • New LearningCurve adaptive quizzes for self-practice

“Speech Craft is the best book we have ever used.”
– Jane Pierce Saulnier, Emerson College

“Exceptionally sound in its focus on diversity and culturally aware issues and needs.”
– Linda Levitt, Stephen F. Austin State University

“The tone and personality are the best I’ve seen in a public speaking text.”
– Kalyea Annen, Ohio State University
