Look Inside Look Inside The Developing Person Through the Life Span by Kathleen Stassen Berger - Eleventh Edition, 2020 from Macmillan Student Store

The story of human development continually changes. The best person to tell it is Kathleen Berger

With Kathleen Stassen Berger's always contemporary, always compelling textbook, students learn to see how the basic ideas of developmental psychology apply to their own lives, the lives of those around them, and the lives of others of all life stages and in cultures all around the world. Berger's narrative voice, wide-ranging cultural perspective, and focus on universal themes captivate students from the outset, helping them grasp the important theoretical and scientific work driving the field of developmental psychology today.

Features

Visualizing Development

This feature extends the book’s multicultural coverage, linking together graphics, text, and photographs to tell a visual story about an important concept in life-span development from age structure and development to the impact of adult overweight around the globe.

Opposing Perspectives

The feature asks students to look at both sides of a controversial issue (spanking, co-sleeping, the impact of culture versus genes, etc.), thereby expanding the coverage of critical thinking.

Attention to Cultural Diversity

Berger highlights cultural differences and universals and their impact on the values and customs that shape individual development and makes culture an enlightening, unifying theme for the text.

Critical Thinking and Applications-Based Pedagogy

From the chapter-opening stories and the "A View From Science" features, to the questions presented in "Observation Quizzes," "Especially For," and "Think Critically" marginalia, to the Visualizing Development infographics, Berger’s pedagogy has students thinking about the real implications—for themselves and for the world at large—of the material they are learning.

Inside the Brain

Available in several of the book’s chapters, this feature takes students to the frontiers of contemporary neuroscience research, such exploring topics as the intricacies of prenatal and infant brain development, brain specialization and speech development, brain maturation and emotional development, and neuronal growth during adulthood.

Integrated Assessment Throughout the Book

Updated What Will You Know? questions for each chapter and What Have You Learned? questions after every chapter section. These assessments are designed to make it clear to students exactly what their learning objectives are and what they need to learn to meet their career goals.

New to This Edition

Hundreds of New Research Citations Coverage incorporates new developments in diverse research areas, including epigenetics, prenatal nutrition, the microbiome, autism spectrum disorder, vaping, high-stakes testing, opioid addiction, and gender nonconformity Special emphasis is on brain development, culture, genetics, and emotional development. Berger includes this research in a way your students will understand and be able to apply in their future careers.

New and updated Data Connections activities! For each chapter, students have an opportunity to expand their understanding of key topics and data interactively in the accompanying courseware, Achieve. From interactive maps showing rates of breastfeeding and immunization across the country (and around the world), to manipulatable graphs showing trends in adolescent risk-taking behaviors, students will be able to take a new hands-on-approach to understanding the data in child development.

NEW! Career Alerts at the end of each Part present career options in various applied settings.

New! Chapter Apps that students can download to their smartphones have been added, offering a real-life application of the science of life-span development.

New and Updated Visualizing Development infographics such as immunization trends (Chapter 5) and  More Play Time, Less Screen Time (Chapter 10).

"I really like Berger’s writing style. It is not as dry as most textbooks. In my opinion, her writing style holds the interest of the reader, and she makes good use of visuals to help readers understand the content. The research is current, and so the content is current and relevant."
— Laurie A. Bulock, Michigan State University

"Kathleen Berger's Life Span text provides an engaging, comprehensive, and updated coverage of the life span, emphasizing the multidisciplinary nature of the field."
— Virginia Tompkins, The Ohio State University - Lima

"Berger's book is a great text for covering the lifespan, because it is written from the bio-psycho-social perspective and is detailed, comprehensive, interactive, and approachable for students. Berger's writing style is truly engaging, as I often hear from students. Her coverage of multidisciplinary perspectives and research is one of the key reasons I continue to use this text."
—Melissa Cannon, Western Oregon University

"I have used this text since I began teaching the course 25 years ago. We have continued to adopt it because students find it very engaging, readable, and interesting. They feel they can hear the voice of Dr. Berger, and they like her. We have evaluated a few other texts and considered changing several times but other texts seem dry by comparison and do not have the same emphasis on application of concepts to everyday life."
—Catherine Deering, Clayton State University
