Teaching students both the theory and “how-to” of GIS using Arc GIS Pro
Shellito’s Discovering GIS and ArcGIS Pro provides students with hands-on work with GIS software, while explaining the “how” and “why” behind each application. Software changes quickly—the theory has a longer shelf life. The goal of Discovering GIS and ArcGIS Pro is to teach students how to combine GIS concepts with ArcGIS Pro software skills, preparing students for successful careers in the real world. Each chapter focuses on using a variety of ArcGIS tools in a real-world context. At the start of each chapter, a scenario puts the student in a particular role with a number of tasks to accomplish.
Features
- An application-based approach. Each module focuses on using a variety of ArcGIS Pro tools in a real-world context. At the start of each module, a scenario puts the student in a particular role with a number of tasks to accomplish. In addition, each module describes professions and applications in the real world that make use of the module’s theory and skills.
- The ability to localize each module with freely available data. Although each module’s data are taken from various locations within Ohio, the data being used are freely available; more importantly, the same kind of data can be obtained for other local areas within the United States. Each module provides brief instructions on how to obtain the same kind of local data for performing the module’s tasks.
- Smartboxes, Troubleboxes, and Questions.
- Smartboxes present theory and background information at an appropriate time to help readers understand what their actions are really doing.
- Troubleboxes contain troubleshooting tips for common problems that may arise.
- Questions are interspersed throughout each module. These questions are intended to keep students on track as they move through the module, connecting the buttons and dialogs they’re using to the goals of the project they are working on. Conceptually, many questions also ask students to think about and reflect on the commands and activities they’re completing.
- Related Concepts for each module. The Related Concepts section at the end of each module presents important information about related topics that weren’t covered in the module.
New to This Edition
- The book has been updated from the ground up using ArcGIS Pro rather than ArcMap, which was used in the prior editions. ArcGIS Pro is the new standard in desktop GIS from Esri, and the book has been updated to utilize it in each module.
- Modules 3 and 4, on making a map layout and publishing a web application, respectively, were remade to contain different types of approaches using ArcGIS Pro techniques. Notably, Modules 13, 16, and 18 were rewritten to utilize the new ArcGIS Pro approaches to remotely sensed imagery, animations, and 3D visualization.
- Many new and revised Smartboxes and Related Concepts sections are included throughout the text to address these concepts. New and revised Troubleboxes throughout the book address common questions related to ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
