An attention to the principles of teaching statistics effectively.
By focusing on the body of cognitive psychology research relating to the teaching of statistics, particularly the work of Lovett and Greenhouse, Nolan and Heinzen strive to bring empirical research to the creation of each component of the book and the media.

Nolan and Heinzen’s pedagogy first emphasizes mastering concepts, and then gives students multiple step-by-step examples of the process of each statistical method, including the mathematical calculations.

Extensive Check Your Learning exercises at the end of each section of the chapter help students master content before moving on to new concepts in the chapter.

Coverage of five major emerging trends in behavioral statistics:

Trend 1: Visual Displays of Data. Data graphics are the hot new way to search for patterns, tell data-driven stories, and gain new insights from the enormous volumes of information available to us. We help students to become savvier at visualizing data not only in Chapter 3, but in a number of other chapters that introduce variations on graphing.

Trend 2: Crowdsourcing. Increasingly, researchers are crowdsourcing their data. In Chapter 5, we lay out the pros and cons of analyzing data derived in this way.

Trend 3: Reproducibility. Even the mainstream media have been breathlessly reporting on a "reproducibility crisis" in the behavioral sciences. The problem? A whole lot of studies have failed to replicate the original findings the second (and third and fourth) times they were conducted. In Chapter 7, we outline this high-visibility challenge to the field, but we also consider the possibility that self-correcting science is good for the behavioral sciences and for society.

Trend 4: The "New Statistics." Behavioral science research journals are increasingly demanding the inclusion of the so-called "new statistics" – particularly effect sizes and confidence intervals – in published articles (Cumming, 2012). We explore these recent changes in the reporting of statistics, and why this is a big step in the right direction, in Chapter 8. We also introduce the relevant new statistics alongside every hypothesis test in Chapters 9 through 17.

Trend 5: Bayesian Analysis. In Chapter 11, we introduce basic Bayesian logic, and explore why many researchers prefer this approach. We urge students to watch for a continuing shift in accepted statistical approaches over the next decade.

Available in LaunchPad, the new Interpreting Statistical Results digital activity asks students to interpret statistical data from a recent research project to sharpen this important skill.

The new Data Ethics feature, in every chapter of the book, addresses the issues surrounding outdated research practices and introduces students to the set of principles related to all stages of working with data – research design, data collection, statistical analyses, interpretation of analyses, and reporting of outcomes. The push toward a more ethical and transparent approach to data is often termed "open science," a set of practices that encourage collaboration, and include the sharing of research methodology, data, and statistical analyses in ways that allow others to question and even to try to recreate the findings.

A brand new Chapter 18 on choosing the right statistical test and reporting statistical results has been added. It includes a section on reporting statistics that includes a discussion of helpful resources, an overview of what should be included in APA-style Methods and Results sections, and an exploration of ethical practices – all using research examples on the benefits of giving versus receiving advice. This new chapter also includes additional coverage of ethical considerations for reporting data, including a discussion of Open Practice badges.

Chapter 1, An Introduction to Statistics and Research Design, includes a new section on Data Ethics that introduces the new recurring feature on data ethics, as well as introducing and defining the terms "data ethics" and "open science." That section is then followed by the new Data Ethics feature on preregistration that introduces and defines the terms "preregistration" and "HARKing".

Chapter 3, Visual Displays of Data, now includes a new section on innovative ways to display variability, particularly in terms of visualizing the full variability of a data set. This includes a new graph that demonstrates why bar graphs may obscure the underlying story of the data and a new graph depicting a violin plot.

An expanded discussion of the increasing use of and drawbacks of crowdsourced data, as well as a list of additional resources for collecting data in this manner is now included in Chapter 5 on Sampling and Probability.

Chapter 12,One-Way Between-Groups ANOVA, now includes new material introducing omega squared and its calculation as a less biased estimate of effect size for ANOVA.

New SPSS examples and screenshots are integrated throughout the entire book as well as new photo examples.

Susan A. Nolan

Susan A. Nolan is Professor of Psychology at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. Susan researches the interpersonal consequences of mental illness and the role of gender in science careers. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation. Susan is the 2021 President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology and a past president of the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA). She is a Fellow of the EPA, the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Association for Psychological Science. She holds an A.B. from the College of the Holy Cross and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Susan is fascinated by the applications of psychology to the “real world,” both locally and globally. She served as a representative from the APA to the United Nations for five years, and was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she and her husband have a home. She loves to travel. Susan uses the examples she encounters through these experiences in the classroom, in this textbook, and in the statistics textbooks that she co-authors. They also provide ideas for the Psychology Today blog that she co-authors on psychology research related to misinformation.


Thomas Heinzen

Tom Heinzen was a 29-year-old college freshman and a magna cum laude graduate of Rockford College. He earned his PhD in social psychology at the State University of New York at Albany in just 3 years. He published his first book on frustration and creativity in government 2 years later; was a research associate in public policy until he was fired for arguing over the shape of a graph; and then began a teaching career at William Paterson University of New Jersey. He founded the psychology club, established an undergraduate research conference, and has been awarded various teaching honors while continuing to write journal articles, books, plays, and two novels that support the teaching of general psychology and statistics. He is also the editor of Many Things to Tell You, a volume of poetry by elderly writers. Tom is a member of numerous professional societies, and is a Fellow of the APA, the EPA, the APS, and the New York Academy of Science. His wife, Donna, is a physician assistant who has volunteered her time in relief work following hurricanes Mitch and Katrina; and their daughters work in public health, teaching, and medicine.
