With Macmillan’s superior content delivered by Achieve (full course solution) or Achieve Read & Practice (e-book + online homework), Kathleen Berger’s breakthrough text tells a compelling story of life-span development via a topically organized approach.

This is not a reorganized iteration of another Berger textbook, but rather a fully reconceived first edition exploring human development topic by topic. But as always with Berger, it is exceptionally accessible and compelling, distinguished by an engaging narrative voice, wide-ranging cultural perspective, and an emphasis on relating universal themes  to students' own lives.

The Achieve option for this book offers a variety of engaging activities including  Data Connections (a hands-on approach to understanding research data, Visualizing Development, (which explores important concepts through a combination of media),  and Developing Lives (where students to “raise” a virtual child from newborn to teenager) updated for Fall 2022 with new features and functionality.

Features

ONLINE
New! Achieve for The Developing Person Through Childhood and Adolescence
Achieve sets a whole new standard for integrating assessments, activities, and analytics into your teaching. It brings together all of the high quality features that instructors and students love about its predecessor LaunchPad—interactive e-book, LearningCurve adaptive quizzing and other assessments, immersive learning activities, extensive instructor resources—in a powerful new platform that offers:

  • A cleaner, more intuitive, mobile-friendly interface
  • Powerful analytics
  • Self-regulated learning and goal-setting surveys
  • A fully integrated iClicker classroom response system, with questions available for each unit or the option to integrate your own

Featured in Achieve
Data Connections.
From interactive maps showing rates of breastfeeding and immunization, to manipulatable graphs showing trends in adolescent risk-taking behaviors, this feature lets students take a  hands-on approach to understanding the data in life span development themselves.

Visualizing Development
. These assessments link together graphics, text, and photographs to tell a visual story about an important concept in life-span development.

Developing Lives (fully integrated into Achieve and also available as a standalone resource). Loaded with interactive features and pedagogy, this remarkable online experience asks students to “raise” a virtual child through the teenage years, making crucial decisions and responding to events.

Achieve Read & Practice
E-book + LearningCurve adaptive quizzing

Achieve Read & Practice marries Macmillan Learning’s mobile, accessible e-book with the acclaimed LearningCurve adaptive quizzing. It is an easy-to-use yet exceptionally powerful teaching and learning option that streamlines the process of increasing student engagement and understanding—and the cost is significantly less than that of a printed book.

IN THE TEXT
Unique coverage of Neuroscience and Development

A  separate chapter on Neuroscience (Ch. 5)  tells a cohesive story about brain development across the life span. In addition, in some chapters, Inside the Brain presents cutting-edge research on the brain with charts, figures, and photos.

Attention to Cultural Diversity
Berger highlights cultural differences and universals and their impact on the values and customs that shape individual development.

Critical Thinking and Applications-Based Pedagogy
From the chapter-opening stories and the "A View From Science" and “A Case to Study” features, to the questions presented in "Observation Quizzes," “Especially For,” “Think Critically,” and new “Chapter Apps” marginalia, to the Visualizing Development infographics, Berger’s pedagogy has students thinking about the real implications—for themselves and for the world at large.

Opposing Perspectives
The feature asks students to look at both sides of a controversial issue (from prenatal sex selection to e-cigarettes, etc.), thereby expanding the coverage of critical thinking.

Career Alerts present career options in various applied settings.

New to This Edition

"Berger covers areas that other textbooks do not and does so in a way that is accessible and engaging.

Berger places development in context, highlighting how our previous interactions and our unique backgrounds influence not only how we interact with others, as parents, caregivers, teachers, partners, friends, co-workers, but also what we take away from these interactions.  Berger offers students models for how to become more effective caregivers, teachers, clinicians, and humans.

By using current issues (COVID-19), periodically returning to key concepts (interleafing), and offering multiple formative and summative assessment opportunities, Berger effectively blends relevance with sound educational practices. Berger’s engaging stories and explanations provide the immediate, practical connections to work and life that our current cohort of students expect.

I want something that will engage the students, to help them recognize the relevance and the potential of studying human development. This textbook helps me to achieve that."
— Rick Shifley, Ph.D, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"The beginning stories are a nice 'hook' to encourage students to continue reading. The writing style is far superior to my current text. Combined with current research and diversity/cross-cultural information, this text may prove to be the best on the market."
— Kimberly Duvall, Ph.D, James Madison University

"Kathleen Berger does a marvelous job of presenting issues and research that are current. The fact that there is literature cited regarding the current pandemic is particularly impressive. I am a big fan of the author's writing style. This is one of the main reasons that I was excited to hear that she had a topical text in the making. "
— James Guinee, Ph.D, University of Central Arkansas

"I really like how the text flows. There is an interconnectedness to the topics along with a smooth transition. I think my students would enjoy this text. It is much easier to read and follow than my current text. "
— Sabrina Rieder, SUNY Rockland Community College

"The author has managed to explain some of the most difficult concepts in this class in a clear way without watering it down – that is a significant strength!!  The example of differential susceptibility is one of the best I have read."
— Dawn Kriebel, Immaculata University
